Here's Leo, lounging for his portrait. As I mentioned yesterday, this is the second of two pet portraits commissioned by my step-sister Christie. JB was the first:
I notice Leo has more of an intensity in the portrait, perhaps from the harder strokes and angle combined with a more intense warm color key. It's funny how different people preferences are. I prefer the more cooler subtle color palate of JB but my special lady (and painting constant) prefers this more intense one. Either way, I also simply like seeing these two side by side. They make a good pair, like warm and cold, complimenting each other. :)

I love your two latest dog portraits! There is something almost sculptural to them. They both look solid and very much "there."
Questions: Do you work on a black or at least dark ground? I seem to see bits of it showing here and there. If so, how do you go about creating the dark ground? Just a layer of oil? Perhaps acrylic? Something else?
It's a very attractive effect - sort of giving lost and found outlines here and there without actually explicitly outlining anything.
And do you first make a light sketch in pencil (or something like that), to correctly place the forms, or do you just jump straight in with paint?
I could not pick a favorite. Tried. I love Leo's eyes. They look so nice with his coloring. These will definitely be a treasured pair.
