"Didn't I tell you?
I am the ocean, you are a fish; do not go to the dry land,
it is me, who is your comforting body of water."
-Rumi
I don't really do portraits, at least not on purpose. I really just look for the right shapes of light, the colors and the patterns that they make. I like to think I'm equal opportunity when it comes to subjects. If the light is there, I'll paint it. I'm always just waiting for the light to show up. During an afternoon meeting, the light happened to fall just right on our department director. His name is Mike but I like to think of him as the man from the black sea.
Happy 300th painting to me. :)

Love the way you sculpted the "man from the black sea's" face. Love all the shapes and colors.
Wow, two posts in one week. That's what I 'm talk'in about.
Happy 300th!
another beauty!
I agree with Carol. You "sculpted" the face, hands, etc. You conveyed the way the light hits each plane very well. The face is perfect, not overdone but says just enough. Leaving a bit of mystery.
Hey, Happy 300 Jeff! Right On :D
Dito! I very much like your sytle, Jeff - just the essential in beautiful colours. The three lamps in this one add so much space - perfect!
hey jeff - love love love what you have been doing lately. you are really getting the light and glow in the paintings! I liked what you said on my blog about "delivering" that's a good way to put it. I think your brushstrokes are definitely delivering.
This is a great composition, with the background adding great interest to the painting.
Did I tell you already how much I enjoyed reading your "What I've Learned"? Those voices in my head keep telling me how amateurish and poor my paintings are. Reading what you wrote made me realize I just need to tell them to shut up, and to keep on painting. Thanks!
How did I miss this one? For me it's the green, brown, grey to the left background with those 3 lights at the top. Wow, pretty cool, Jeff!
Great painting.
