#283 - Polygon Sunflower

5"x 7" oil on masonite Sold

This is my favorite in a long while.
It was one of those that came off very naturally and is as chunky and simple as I like. I just love to see things made of these simple sqaures. It almost feels like trying to got from analog to digital. One of my first jobs working with computers was making graphics and especially 3d models. These objects are made of polygon and you have to think very simply when making the essential shape of the object. I don't know why I like painting on black, I think it also has somekind of reference to graphics or perhaps animation with it's black outlines on objects.
The glare monster tried to get this one. The original is better that this image. I think I'm going back to paiting on gesso (instead ofblack house paint) so that it sucks up all the oil, which makes it matte so I can make a good scan (vanish after).

Jeff, This has so much appeal, the colors, the chunky strokes...everything. I love the way you handled the background. I paint chunky too and I have no idea why. I just like it that way. I always use black gesso or cad red lt. for the background because they both effect the final look of the painting. I want the ground to show.I have admired your work for a long time and I'm happy to see you posting more often.

This is fantastic! I love the abstract nature of the organic flower, here.

I like painting on dark layers because it is almost as if you are creating something from a complete void!

Keep on going in this vein, Jeff.

Bright, fun, graphic, and bold!

Love the softness and color of the background against the geographic shapes in the flower and vase. The flower really pops.
Intersting to hear what you paint on too. Was wondering. Never tried that. hmm...

Everything about this piece works to keep the eye moving around from subject to background and back. It's so beautiful and harmonious!
